WELCOME

TO THE

HOMEPAGE

OF THE

58TH NORTH CAROLINA STATE TROOPS

This Webpage is dedicated to a regiment of North Carolina troops who did yeoman service for the Confederacy from 1862-1865.

In the spring of 1862 both the Confederacy and the Union came to realize that the war would not be the easily settled affair they had envisioned it to be. The Confederacy resorted to conscription to augment its forces. The 58th was a regiment raised from these conscriptions, even though its ranks did include volunteers. Many of the 58th were mountaineers who just wanted to be left alone and desertion tended to erode its ranks for the first 1 ½ years of its existence. On this site is a history of the unit written by Jeffrey C. Weaver. Jeff was a dedicated historian who has written countless volumes on the units of the Confederate States Army. AOL has deleted many of Jeff’s sites dedicated to the War Between The States, including the one on the 58th North Carolina. Sadly Jeff passed away on April 7, 2012 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. I maintain this site in honor of Jeff, who was a friend. I hope anyone who visits this site enjoys their visit, and will go away knowing a bit more about this regiment than when they came. If you would like to comment on this unit or  Jeff, a guestbook is included for your comments. And many thanks to Jeff. He is sorely missed.
